ECI team reviews poll preparations

A team of the 1 Election Commission of India (ECI) led by Chief Election Commissioner Najim Zaidi today arrived at Imphal to review the preparations of the Manipur Assembly polls due in a few months time.
Shortly after their arrival, the ECI team met representatives of political parties at Hotel Classic Grande and sought their opinion on the preparations being taken up ahead of the Assembly election, said a source.
During the meeting representatives of the political parties urged the ECI team to spread awareness amongst the voters so that muscle and money power cannot have a say in the election.
They also urged the ECI team to spread relevant information to the public via the media.
State CEO Vivek Dewangan gave a detailed presentation to the ECI team and the police also followed suit, said the source.
The ECI team also gave a detailed account on expenditure monitoring.
The ECI team is scheduled to meet the respective DCs and SPs.
The ECI team will also meet the Chief Secretary and the DGP.
Meanwhile, sources said the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) is set to start poll campaign across the State from next week.
In the run up to polls, defection has become a flavour of Manipur poll season.
In the hope of improving their potential, all the four All India Trmamul Congress fATTC) ML As of the State unit defected to the Congress a few days ago.
But more from the ruling Congress party and others are also joining the State BJP.
Veteran Congress leader Yumkham Erabot Singh representing Wangkhei Constituency, resigned from MLAship after he quit the party to join the State BJP recently.
Protesting the entry of former TC legislator Konthoujam Sarat Singh to the Congress, all executive members of Konthoujam Block Congress Committee resigned from the party yesterday.
