Imphal, May 29 2025:
Condemning the abduction of a truck driver near Kaiphundai Khun on the Imphal-Jiribam road, despite being escorted by CRPF personnel, the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMWU) has urged the relevant authorities to rescue the driver and also probe the security lapse.
Speaking to the media, AMRTDMWU general secretary Maimom Anil said that the driver Rahmat Sheikh is a resident of West Bengal and he was transporting plywoods from Imphal.
Expressing concern over the driver's unknown whereabouts, he stated that drivers are not enemies of any group, but ordinary people who drive to support their families.
He appealed to the group concerned to clarify why the driver was abducted and release him.
Rahmat was driving a West Bengal-registered truck carrying plywood from Imphal when he was abducted by unknown miscreants at Kaiphundai Village in Tamenglong, despite being escorted by CRPF personnel, he said and added that the whereabouts of the driver still remain unknown.
Anil questioned the inaction of the escort party during the abduction, pointing out that this isn't the first instance of drivers being attacked under the nose of security forces.
He cited past incidents of miscreants firing at drivers escorted by Central forces, raising concerns about the safety of drivers transporting goods on National Highways.
Appealing for public support in tracing Rahmat's whereabouts, Anil requested the group responsible for the abduction to release him safely and unharmed.
The Kaiphundai Village Authority has also condemned the abduction, and the villagers had staged a protest demanding the driver's safe release.
