No Tobacco Day observed

Health Director Dr Chambo Gonmei has appealed to the public to refrain from using tobacco products, which are known to be detrimental to health.
He made the statement during a World No Tobacco Day observance held at the Heritage Hall of IMA, Manipur at Lamphel today.
The programme was organised by National Tobacco Control Programme, State Health Society, NHM Manipur in association with Directorate of Health and Family Welfare under the theme "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products" .
Addressing the function as the chief guest, Dr Chambo stated that tobacco products offer no benefits to humans.
He also said that smoking can lead to diseases of the heart, liver, kidney, prostate, and forgetfulness.
The senior doctor appealed to the people to spread awareness on the harm of tobacco use to make Manipur a tobacco free State.
People didn't know much about the harm of tobacco products on health in the past, but today, as cases of death from tobacco use have increased, legislation like the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) has been formulated, he said.
Stating that tobacco products contain carcinogenic materials, he added that at least five people die every two minute in India due to tobacco use as per reports.
Emphasizing that "health is wealth," he urged the people to stay away from tobacco products.
A pledge was also taken to spread awareness about the harm of tobacco use to those who are unaware during the function.
Director of Family Welfare Services Dr N Hemantakumar and Additional Director of Health Dr N Bino also attended the programme among others.
