Imphal, September 24 2025:
Amid ongoing controversies over alleged medical negligence at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), organizations from Singjamei side have clarified that the death of a young woman post delivery at the hospital wasn't due to the absence of the attending doctor.
The case pertains to the death of Nongthombam ningol Chingsubam ongbi Manju (35) w/o Chingsubam Niran of Lilong Chajing who was attended by one Dr Pritam for child delivery.
She died in the wee hours of September 21 .
Addressing the media at Singjamei Chirom Leikai Community Hall today, Chirom ongbi Sanghai, mother of Dr Pritam, expressed deep sorrow over Manju's death but defended her son's efforts, stating that he did everything possible to save the young woman's life.
She appealed to the public to refrain firm spreading rumours about the tragic incident, specifically requesting that people not to speculate that Manju underwent surgery in the absence of the attending doctor.
Stating that Manju gave birth in the presence of her son Dr Pritam and two other doctors on September 20, she added that her son returned home only after confirming the patient's stability.
She further stated that her son rushed to the hospital upon being informed that the patient (Manju) was unwell and subsequently performed a surgery.
Dr Pritam returned home after ensuring the patient was stable, she said and added that her son was called back to the hospital in the wee hours but Manju tragically passed away around 3.30 am .
Emphasising that her son did everything possible to save the young woman, she dismissed the claim that the patient underwent surgery in the doctor's absence as entirely inaccurate.
She alleged that her son was attacked by a mob while attempting to explain the situation to the patient's family and appealed to the people to refrain from assaulting doctors.
She said that her son is recovering but is worried about his future.
She also expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of the young woman and the fate of her newborn.
Ayekpam Ranita, president of Singjamei Mathak Thokchom Leikai Meira Paibi Lup, also expressed sorrow over the death of Manju.
She, however, said that Dr Pritam is a dedicated doctor well-respected by the community and his patients.
Saying that a thorough investigation is required to understand the cause of Manju's death, she said that blindly accusing a medical practitioner of negligence is unfortunate.
She emphasized that doctors should fulfil their duties to meet public expectations of being saviours, but suspending healthcare services only harms the public.
The press briefing was organised by Chirom Leikai Nupi Lamjing Lup, Youth Convention Imphal Singjamei Chirom Leikai and Thokchom Leikai Nupi Yaipha Chaokhatpa Thourang Lup.
