Imphal, September 18 2025:
Even as floodwaters wreaked havoc in parts of the State, a surge of people heading to catch or purchase fish at Wangoi areas caused traffic congestion along Mayai Lambi today.
Notably, the embankment of Imphal River breached at Wangoi Mamang Khaidem the previous morning, inundating houses, fish farms, poultry farms and paddy lands at Yumnam Huidrom, Mayang Imphal, Laiphrakpam, Iramsiphai, Paobitek, Phibou, Chabung Company, Chirai etc .
As floods swept fish out of farms, thousands of people from various areas flocked to flooded zones, armed with fishing gear, like some sort of festivity to catch or buy fish, resulting in significant traffic congestion along Mayai Lambi.

Controlling the crowd proved difficult for the police, especially since the road connecting Yumnam Huidrom and Mayang Imphal is inundated.
Sharing his ordeal to The Sangai Express, a fish farmer stated that the floodwaters started inundating residential areas and agricultural lands at Wangoi side in a flash as the Imphal River's embankment suffered a major breach at Wangoi Mamang Khaidem.
Saying that the flooding has caused extensive damage, impacting thousands of acres of paddy land and fish farms, he added that the fish he had been rearing to sell during Ningol Chakkouba had all escaped due to the deluge.
Expressing frustration that people were coming to catch the escaped fish without restraint like a festive opportunity, he lamented that they seemed unaware of the hardships faced by fish farmers like himself, who had invested significant labour and resources into their farms.
He expressed a desire for the people to extend help to the aggrieved farmers instead of taking undue advantage of their misfortune.
It is reported that a major portion of the breach's embankment has been repaired.
