Imphal, June 17 2015 :
Only one out of every four shops opened in the general area of Imphal are registered under the Imphal Municipal Corporation, officials at Imphal Municipal Corporation told TSE today.
As per the law, shopkeepers are required to register their shops with the Imphal Municipal Corporation.
However, only 6540 shops (25 per cent) have registered under the corporation till date.
The corporation has four different categories for registration.
The registration amount of these categories largely varies according to the size and type of the shop.
The registration amount for a victual shop can cost upto Rs 25,000, while retail food stores have to register for about 1 to 2 lakh.
These small scale shops are required to pay a monthly tax of Rs 200 and 500 respectively.
A larger store/shop is registered for as much as Rs 5 lakhs and a monthly tax of Rs 1000, officials informed.
Registering the shop would benefit the owner in cases like burglary, fire or natural calamities.
However most shop owners choose to skip the registration process despite various notifications issued by the corporation.
With cases of food poisoning on the rise, the Department has appealed to all the shop owners under Imphal area (ward no.1 to 27) to register their shops with the IMC immediately.
