Ukhrul, October 15 2025:
The Kisan Morcha, Ukhrul district has appealed to the Union Minister of Jal Shakti for the immediate establishment of a Water Resources Division headed by an Executive Engineer in Ukhrul district.
The petition, signed by RS Khawungsing, vice president of Kisan Morcha, Ukhrul district, stated that Ukhrul district, being a hilly region with numerous streams and rivers, faces recurring problems of soil erosion, landslides, and flooding during the rainy season.
The absence of a dedicated Water Resources Division has severely hampered the timely construction and maintenance of retaining walls, river embankments, and protective drainage systems, resulting in repeated damage to farmlands, roads, and village infrastructure.
The petition further stated that every year, agricultural land and crops worth crores of rupees are lost to riverbank erosion and flash floods, leaving farmers in distress and severely reducing food productivity in the district.
A local division would not only enable prompt response to such natural calamities but also facilitate long-term water management and flood-control projects for sustainable development, it said.
Considering the immense hardship faced by the residents of Ukhrul district, the petition urged the immediate establishment of a new Water Resources Division in Ukhrul District.
The prompt attention and intervention of the Minister will greatly relieve this longstanding public need, enabling the systematic planning and execution of retaining walls and river embankments for the benefit of farmers and the general public, it added.
