CorCom greets on International Women's Day

Imphal, March 07 2017: While appreciating the commendable responsibilities shouldered by women in socio-economic, cultural and political realms, the CorCom has greeted has greeted all women on the occasion of the International Women's Day.

Although it is said that men are physically stronger, women have been shouldering many responsibilities which are beyond men's capacity and they have been sharing equal responsibilities in bringing human civilization up to the present stage.

The younger generations seem to have realised that women's struggle for emancipation and equal status (with men) is marching on the path of victory.

Since 1970s most feminists started realising the general perspectives and social norms rooted in patriarchal societies.

Yet, women's common objectives have not been fully achieved even today.

Women are still lagging behind their male counterparts in terms of education and health care, and they have been suffering more, the CorCom remarked in a statement issued by its publicity committee.

Even though Manipuri women always enjoyed a respected position in society, suppression and violence against women have been rising at an alarming rate since Manipur was taken into the political and cultural domain of India.

This is an outcome of the communal social structure of India and the general tendency to suppress women and undermine achievements and capacities of women.

Systematic suppression of women was something unheard of before Manipur was taken into the political and cultural domain of India.

Women were always given freedom for pro-active roles in social and political matters.

A woman, offended by a man, was always given a social sanction to avenge the offence done to her, it said.

However, it does serious harm to women themselves and the human civilization as a whole when women, unable to stand on their own feet financially, start selling their bodies.

These situations are characteristics of colonial rule where women are not given their dues and there is no possibility of giving women their due rights and opportunities.

Being an alleged occupied territory, all the people of the land are being enveloped by a thick cloud of darkness.

The only way out of this darkness is to restore the lost sovereignty of Manipur, CorCom asserted.

It then called upon all the people to work collectively so as to put an end to all forms of crime against women and form a society free from all forms of suppression.
