76th Van Mahotsav: Wide-scale tree plantation drive organised

Wide-scale tree plantation drives are being held across the State as a part of the ongoing 76th Van Mahotsav celebration to raise awareness about the importance of trees and forests in maintaining ecological balance and ensuring environmental stability.
Van Mahotsav, also known as the "Festival of Trees", is an annual week-long tree-planting festival celebrated in the country during the first week of July.
Today, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed Van Mahotsav 2025 with a meaningful tree plantation drive under the theme "Ek Paudha Maa Ke Naam 2.0", paying tribute to mothers through environmental action.
The Van Mahotsav celebration held in collaboration with 86 Battalion, CRPF, Lamphel, saw active participation from faculty, HODs, staff, students, CRPF personnel and CRED & MSS staff of RIMS, Imphal.
The event was graced by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal; Dr N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital; Saurabh Kumar Choudhary, Commandant, 86 Bn CRPF; and Kamei James Rongmei, Assistant Commandant, 86 Bn CRPF among others.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Sunil Kumar emphasized the need for collective responsibility in protecting nature and highlighted how the symbolic gesture of planting a sapling in the name of one's mother fosters both emotional and environmental consciousness.
Held at the Nursing College Hostel Complex, the event aimed to promote environmental sustainability, honour motherhood, and raise awareness on afforestation, with over 500 saplings planted to boost green cover and improve air quality.
Moreover, the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)- Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Imphal West and the 86 Battalion CRPF, Lamphel under the aegis of Inspector General, Manipur and Nagaland Sector, jointly celebrated Van Mahotsav 2025 by organising a mass tree plantation drive at Awang Wabagai and Eco Park Khurkhul today.
The tree plantation drive was conducted in collaboration with DFO Central Forest Division Mantripukhri, District Administration Imphal West, SHGs (Awang Wabagai) and Khurkhul Welfare Organisation.
The event was graced by Saurabh Kumar Choudhary, Commandant, 86 Bn CRPF; Dr Ch Basudha Devi, Head, Regional Centre, ICAR Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat, Imphal; K Jadumani, Additional DC, Imphal West; Ajeet Kumar Ram, Assistant Commandant, 86 Bn CRPF; Dr L Kanta Singh, Senior Scientist, KVK Imphal West; Dr Manoj Kumar Pandey, Senior Scientist/ Head of KVK Churachandpur; and L Bobby, Chairperson.
Imphal West Zila Parishad among others.
The tree plantation drive held under the theme "Plant Trees, Save Trees", aimed to restore degraded land, increase green cover and support biodiversity using scientifically selected indigenous species.
Around 700 tree saplings were planted during the drive.
Similarly, Sanjenbam Apunba Thouna VLF in collaboration with Nongmaiching Range Central Forest Division organised a plantation drive today at Nongmaiching hill as part of Van Mahotsav celebration.
More than 50 members of Apunba Thouna VLF participated in the plantation drive which was led by Moirangthem Suresh, Beat Officer, Forest Beat Office Sanjenbam.
Likewise, a mass tree plantation programme was also conducted today at Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa in connection with Van Mahotsav 2025.The programme was attended by Syed Abdul Samad, SP, Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa; Dorjey Rangdol, Assistant Commandant, SSB; I Khaba, Assistant Commandant, 5 IRB; Jailors and other ranks of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa.
