Imphal, June 02 2024:
As requested by state authorities, Assam Rifles assisted in clearing the Naga River to alleviate the devastation caused by recent floods by engaging personnel and equipment to desilt, clear sunken debris and remove flotsam, significantly improving the river's flow and reducing water stagnation in the area, said PRO IGAR (S) in a release.
According to the release, the work resulted in clearing of a 1000-metre stretch of the river.
Two officers, one junior commissioned officer and 20 other ranks worked elbow and knee-deep for four hours straight to clear foliage, remove biomass, extract wooden logs, dispose of household materials, and desilt.
"The swift and effective actions taken by the Assam Rifles have greatly enhanced the movement of water in the Naga River.
This crucial intervention is expected to significantly reduce water stagnation by at least 2 feet immediately in the flood-affected areas, providing much-needed relief to the local communities," it continued.
Meanwhile, water resource minister Awangbow Newmai visited the site and interacted with the Assam Rifles team and the residents, further bolstering the morale of the flood-affected community.
His presence underscored the government s commitment to providing comprehensive support to the affected regions, the PRO added.
Similarly, in response to the devastating floods, Assam Rifles stepped in to provide crucial medical assistance to the affected population.
Dedicated medical camps are currently in progress at the relief camp of Mother Teresa Home near Mantripukhri and at ISBT.
As of now, the medical team has screened a total of 828 individuals, including 464 women and 116 children, providing necessary medical attention and distributing essential medicines.
Sore throat, upset stomach, and vomiting are among the major health issues being addressed, according to an IGAR (S) press release.
In addition to the medical camp, a mobile toilet has been installed specifically for the women inmates of the relief camp at Mantripukhri, the release further said.
It also quoted Radhomani, Meira Paibi leader and caretaker of the relief camp near Mantripukhri, as saying, "The Assam Rifles provided a medical camp and mobile toilet without our requesting.
This shows their good heart and dedication to the well-being of the community, especially to the womenfolk" .
