Imphal, August 29 2025: The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), Central Headquarters has said that a recent inspection found the entire Tribal Girls' Hostel at Lambulane occupied by paramilitary forces, with no tribal girl students in residence.

A press release issued by TYCM spokesperson Ningreishang Zimik said that they inspected the hostel yesterday at around 2 pm in the presence of media personnel.

During the inspection, it was found that the only hostel in Imphal catering to tribal girl students and run by the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Government of Manipur - had been entirely occupied by paramilitary forces, leaving no space for its intended residents, it said.

Questioning the purpose of constructing the hostel if it is to be occupied by paramilitary forces, the TYCM urged the authorities concerned to remove the para-military forces from the hostel and ensure its effective and smooth functioning in the larger interest of the tribal students of Manipur at the earliest date.

This is a total suppression of the rights of the tribal students of Manipur, the TYCM said, highlighting that tribal girl students from remote areas are forced to stay in rented houses in Imphal, bearing the burden of hefty rents.

The parents of these students struggle to support and sponsor their children's education while also struggling to manage their families and sustain their day-to-day livelihood through paddy cultivation, it further said.
