Imphal, January 28 2026:
The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), Council Headquarters, has issued an ultimatum to the Governor, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary of the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST), and the Director of the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, demanding that the Tribal Girls' Hostel at Old Lambulane be made operational on or before February 28, 2026 .
In a press release, TYCM stated that they will launch a democratic form of agitation if the Government does not take positive action within the stipulated time.
The entire Tribal Girls' Hostel located at Old Lambulane, Imphal, was occupied by paramilitary forces, following the outbreak of the ethnic clash in Manipur on May 3, 2023, it said and added that the Government removed the para-military forces on September 29, 2025 after they raised the issue.
After the para-military forces were removed, the TYCM-Women & Child Wing had appealed to the Director of the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Manipur, on October 28, 2025, and to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Government of Manipur, on December 19, 2025, urging the commencement of the hostel's operations to address the difficulties faced by tribal girl students in Manipur, it said.
However, the hostel remains non-operational, and this delay constitutes a clear violation of the right to education, TYCM stated.
If the Tribal Girls' Hostel does not function for tribal girl students from remote and far-flung areas, the very purpose of the hostel will be rendered meaningless, TYCM said.
The tribal girl students from far-flung and remote areas are staying in rented houses in Imphal, tirelessly paying rent, it said and added that the parents of these students struggle to support and sponsor their children's education.
