Imphal, February 22 2025:
All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU) has expressed 'deep concern' over the involvement of some individuals of the Manipur Gorkha community in illegal activities, including drug trafficking and poppy cultivation.
AMGSU urged all members of the community to refrain from engaging in such activities, which not only harm individuals but also bring disrepute to the entire community.
The Union also appealed to all Gorkha social organizations, youth clubs, women's societies, and individuals to be vigilant and report any instances of illegal activity which are against the interests of the community, State, and Nation to the authorities.
Saying that they organised a mass rally in 2023 to support the War on Drugs campaign, the Union further urged the relevant officials to take strong action against those involved in illegal activities, including drug trafficking, poppy cultivation, and other such crimes.
Condemning the practice of leasing out land for poppy cultivation in the hill areas of Manipur which is not only illegal but also harmful, AMGSU added that individuals from Gorkha community involved in such activities are motivated by personal gain, and they must be held accountable for any consequences arising from their actions.
