Imphal, September 20 2026: The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union observed the 9th Severance Day today, marking the exclusion of the Meetei/Meitei community from the Scheduled Tribes' list and the division it has created among communities which had been coexisting together for centuries.

Manipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Dr Basudev Singh, Kabui Union Manipur president Dr K Heera Kabui, Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee convenor Laishram Memma and Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union president S Gourakeshwar and secretary (admin) Mutum Churamani attended the observance at the Hotel Nirmala, MG Avenue, Imphal.

Speaking on the occasion, Mutum Churamani said the Meetei/Meitei community meets all the criteria required for it to be recognised as a Scheduled Tribe under the Constitution of India.

The Meetei/Meitei community was recognised as one of the tribes of North East India by the British.

However, the community was denied this status when it was excluded from the list of Scheduled Tribes on September 20, 1951 .

This exclusion of the community from the ST list created division and severed the relationship it had with other communities, he said.

Churamani further stated that the demand for recognition of the community as a Scheduled Tribe is legitimate, and getting this status will help protect and safeguard the indigenous community Constitutionally.

Stating that the demand for ST status is growing in momentum, Churamani said the MMTU is planning a massive campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.
