Imphal, October 14 2025:
The World Meitei Organization (WMO) has underscored the importance of revisiting and teaching the history of Manipur to younger generations.
A discussion programme on "Significance of October 15, 1949 in the history of Manipur" was held today JN Manipur Dance Academy here under the aegis of the WMO.
Speaking at the programme, WMO General Secretary Longjam Samson said that then king of Manipur, Maharaja Bodhchandra signed the Manipur Merger Agreement on September 21, 1948 at Manipur Rajbari, Redlands, Shillong.
Following the signing of this agreement, India annexed Manipur on October 15, 1949, he recalled.

He said that the discussion programme was organised with the primary objective of informing about these landmark historical events to the younger generations.
For thousands of years, Manipur existed as an independent Nation.
Soon after, Manipur regained its independence from British occupation, Manipur drafted its own Constitution and an elected Government was formed.
After annexing Manipur, the Government of India dissolved the elected Government and abolished the Constitution of Manipur.
Moreover, the Government of India did not adhere to the provisions/clauses of the Manipur Merger Agreement, Samson said.
Not long after, the Government of India has been sowing seeds of distrust and animosity among the different communities of Manipur, he said.
Recently, the Rajbari building of Shillong which occupied a key position in the history of Manipur was demolished recently, he said.
Alleging that the Government of India has been working consistently to wipe out the people of Manipur and their history, Samson asserted that the people need to know how mainland India sees Manipur.
The discussion programme was participated by DMU's Political Science Associate Professor Dr Arambam Noni, History Department Assistant Professor Dr Malem Ningthouja, human rights defender MC Meetei and WMO president Arambam Nunglen Luwang as presidium members.
