Imphal, June 13 2009: Different political parties have come out strongly against the recent spate of killing nonlocal labourers by unidentified persons.

They asked the State Government to convene an all-party meet in order to bring a solution to the crisis.

Strongly condemning killing of non-local people, NCP president Radhabinod Koijam accused the SPF Government of failing to protect life and properties of its citizens.

He also questioned what the Government has been doing.

Asking the Government to take up some concrete measures at the earliest so as to protect lives of non-local people, Radhabinod demanded that the criminals involved in the killing spree should be identified and awarded befitting punishment.

The Government should also convene an all-party meet to delve into the roots of the unfolding crisis and possibly find a solution to the crisis, he insisted.

Such inhuman killings have put the lives of Manipuri people staying outside the State at great risks.

In case the Government fails to check the killings, the crisis may result in communal clash, Radhabinod cautioned while urging the Government for fool-proof security measures for the non-local people.

Expressing similar concern, BJP State unit president and former Speaker Dr Haobam Borbabu asserted that killing any Indian citizen, even if they were non-locals was against the law.

In the event of any casualty to Manipuri students pursuing higher studies outside the State as a reaction of the killings perpetrated here, the State Govt should be held accountable.

Pointing out that it is the responsibility of the Govt to protect lives and properties of its citizens, Borbabu asserted that the failure of the Govt in these aspects was a clear indicator that it has failed to maintain law and order and that governance is literally absent in the State.

"Should they continue to remain mere spectators to the daily killings, it would be far better for all for the ruling parties to abdicate power", he asserted.

Due to nagging sense of insecurity coupled with economic woes and failure of the Govt to provide food for non-locals confined in relief camps, many have already fled from the camps.

Fleeing away of the non-locals from these camps has negative implications and potential to spark untoward reactions.

Alleging that the security measures taken by the Government was a hogwash, the BJP president said that his party would not remain mute if the Government does not work sincerely to a bring a solution to the crisis.

He asserted that the matter merits thorough deliberation in an all party meeting.

CPI State secretary L Iboyaima also condemned the killing of non-local labourers.

He expressed his keen desire to take up necessary measures to avert such killings in future.

Saying that non-local labourers scattered across the State should be put in safer places with adequate provision of food and other relief materials, Iboyaima said that CPI favoured an all party meet to study the situation.

Echoing the same view, MPP urged upon the Govt to take up security measures so that the sense of security haunting the people at present is fully addressed.

Meanwhile, the All Manipur NGO Forum has strongly condemn the persisting violence and killings.

It appealed to all concerned to stop any act of violence and intimidation.

Saying that all the incidents of violence that occurred in the past did not have any communal tone, the forum further appealed not to victimise Manipuris staying outside the State.
