Harnessing human resources Minister bet on Co-op movement

Imphal, August 12 2011: In the absence of any major resources which could propelled the economy of the State, development of human resources through co-operative movement in Manipur imperative, Co-operative and Health Minister L Jayantakumar has observed.

Addressing a public meeting held in connection with registering of eight newly formed co-operative societies in ward no.13 of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) at Pishum Ningom Leikai Maning Mandap today, Minister Jayantakumar observed that on account of its limited resources, Manipur has been depending on the fund provided by the Central Government.

Development in Tourism could have been one sector that would contribute to the economy of the State.

But the problem of insurgency has stood on the way.

In such a situation, human resource development is one area that should be given more attention for the betterment of the State and its people.

Stressing on the need for human resource development through co-operative movement in the State, the Minister explained that the underlining motive behind formation of co-operative society is provide a common plaftorm for the like-minded people to work together.

The co-operative movement behind the success of Amul company in Gujarat had been started from a similar public meeting like this, the Minister noted.

There may be no legal binding against Self Help Groups, but the co-operative society has been set up under relevant Act enacted for the purpose.

Hence, the scope of co-operative society is also larger.

Once a co-operation society has been registered, it is mandatory to choose and select a trade and memorandum of agreement has been signed.

Necessary training would also be imparted to the members, the Minister explained.

Senior citizen Pukhrambam Ibohal presided over the meeting which was also attended by DCOs Imphal West Md Najiruddin and Irengbam Ibotombi as guests of honour.

Officials of the Department who were present at the occasion also enlighten the public on the co-operative movement and its functioning.

Prior to the meeting, Minister Jayantakumar inspected distribution of rice at lower price to people of IMC ward no.9 who have been affected by the recent flood.

The rice distribution were carried out at the polling stations.

The Minister covered places like Keishampat Mutum Leikai, Thiyam Leikai, Leimajam Leikai, Kangabam Leikai, Sega Road, Khwairakpam Leikai, Sagolband Nepra Menjor and Meino Leirak, etc during the inspection and interacted with the local people of the areas.

It is said that distribution of rice at cheaper rate would also be carried out in other IMC wards under Keishamthong Assembly Constituency like 11, 12 and 13 in due course of time.
