Hungpung Zimik Shang sets record straight
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, June 30 2025: The Hungpung Zimik Shang (Clan) has said that there exist no historical name used and known by the word "Hungshi" as a clan, not only in Hungpung village, but in all Tangkhul Naga villages.

It added that they heard about the Hungshi clan being in existence in their society only 4/5 years back.

The assertion was made in a rebuttal to the claims made by Hungshi group in news published by local media on June 19 .

This is according to a statement jointly issued by AS Shaivi Zimik, AS Wungreiphao Zimik, AS Kayangnam Zimik and AS Alex Ningreingam Zimik who are Chairman, vice-chairman," secretary and joint secretary of the Hungpung Zimik Shang (Clan) .

Addressing the Hungshi group's claim regarding the three legendary brothers-Khongrei, Hungpung and Meitei, the Hungpung Zimik Shang stated that the name Khongrei/Khongdei as the eldest of the three brothers is foreign to their Thangal (eldest), Hungpung (second son) and the Meitei (youngest) genealogical history.

The footprints and the names imprinted on the erected stone slab substantiate the blood ties of the three brothers in which the name Abung Thangal is clearly mentioned, it said.

The claim of the Khongdei's King's daughter giving birth to "triune son" and becoming a King or head of a village/tribe is contrary to Naga customary and traditional practices as a patriarchal society where only a son can inherit the father's property or titleship and not the daughter's son, it maintained.

In response to the allegation that there has never been any King's (Headman) family or clan name "Zimik" in Hungpung history, the statement clarified that AS Wungnaoyo Zimik ruled Hungpung village with the surname "Zimik" after ascending the throne in 1955 till his last breath in 2008 .

Addressing another allegation, it clarified that Hungpung Headman AS Wungngayung Peter himself asked his name to be removed from the Tangkhul Zimik clan headman's list as he had not enrolled with the clan.

But he never mentioned either having or not having any blood ties with the Tangkhul or Hungpung Zimik clan.

The secretary of the Tangkhul Zimik clan had accordingly made a clarification in The Sangai Express on March 20, 2025 and apologised for the insertion in the list.

But nowhere did the two parties mention or declare the status of the blood relationship.

It further clarified that the acronym HAO (Hungpung Ahungshi Organisation) confined within the King's clan is comprised of only the Shimray (elder) and Shimrah (younger) brother's family lineage.

Hence, the statement that Zimik clan is not part of HAO does not have any customary or legal validity, it said, while adding that the Hungshi group's only ulterior motive is to defame the Hungpung Zimik clan but without any basis.
