UID for LPG consumers

Imphal, January 22 2013:
With a view to streamline distribution of subsidised LPG re-fill to consumers, Unique Identification (UID) numbers would be collected from all the consumers.
An official source said that UID number is not a compulsion in the ongoing verification process and submission of KYC (Know Your Customer) forms.
But all the consumers would be asked to submit their UID numbers without fail after sometime.
The new arrangement would be enforced all over India.
Further, in order to ensure that no consumer enjoys multiple connection and consumers get the exact number of re-fills entitled to them, all the consumers would be asked to open bank accounts for necessary transactions.
The new arrangement has been already introduced in 51 districts of the country this month.
Under this arrangement, all the consumers would be made to pay the non-subsidised rate while taking any re-fill.

After the maximum number of subsidised re-fills entitled to consumers have been given, the additional amount taken by LPG agencies by charging non-subsidised rate would be refunded through their bank accounts.
Of the 51 districts where the new regulation has been already enforced, one district is in Tripura.
The ongoing verification exercise of LPG consumers is expected to finish within a month and a half.
Until this exercise aimed at checking multiple connection is completed, no new connection would be allowed.
For those who need immediate connection, they can apply for the same but they would not get LPG re-fill at the subsidised rate.
After the verification process, they may avail LPG re-fill at the subsidised rate.
Manipur has the longest backlog in terms of distribution of LPG.
One primary reason for this undue backlog is frequent bandhs and blockades.
Another major reason is diversion of LPG re-fills to black markets, added the official source.
