RIMS installs biometric based blood donor system

Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma inaugurated Manipur's first bio-metric-based blood donor management system at the RIMS Department of Blood Transfusion Medicine, on Monday.
According to a press release from RIMS Media Cell, the inauguration programme was attended by RIMS Hospital medical superintendent (MS) Prof N Sanjib Singh and Department of Transfusion Medicine head Prof Pratima Khoyumthem, along with heads of departments, faculty members, officials, staff, and blood donors.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sunil Kumar informed that the biometric-based blood screening system, developed by the RIMS IT Cell, aims to prevent illegal and involuntary blood donations, identify repeat donors, who have not completed the mandatory 90-day interval, help curb commercialisation of blood, and screen for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV .
The system ensures greater safety, traceability, and discourages professional blood donation practices harmful to public health, he said.
In his address, Federation of Indian Blood Donors' Organisation (FIBDO), Manipur president Pradip Moirangthem expressed that activation of the Biometric-Based Blood Donor Management System will be major step in curbing professional blood donations and ensuring ethical practices.
He also suggested installation of the system in JNIMS, Babina Multi Speciality Hospital and other hospitals for wider impact, adding that it would enhance accountability and safety in blood donation across the state.
