AMGSU condemns Gorkhas' indulging in illegal activities

Imphal, February 22 2025:
All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU) has expressed deep concern over the involvement of some individuals of the Gorkha community in illegal activities, including drug trafficking and poppy cultivation.
In a release, AMGSU urged all members of the community to refrain from engaging in such activities, which not only harm individuals but also bring disrepute to the entire community.
All Gorkha social organisations, youth clubs, women's societies, and individuals should be vigilant and report any instances of illegal activity to the authorities, it added.
"We organised a mass rally in 2023 to support the War against Drug.
We urge the officials concerned to take strong action against those involved in illegal activities, including drug trafficking, poppy cultivation, and other such crimes," AMGSU president Lok Bahadur Adhikari said.
AMGSU also condemned the practice of leasing out land for poppy cultivation in the hill areas of Manipur, as these activities art not only illegal but also harmful to the community, while stressing that people from Gorkha community who are indulging in such activities are doing it for personal gain and they must be held accountable for any problems that arise from such cases.
