Imphal, June 19 2025: Manipur ranks first in the country with regard to the highest number of mental health issues, stated RIMS Psychiatry Department head Dr S Gojendra.

Speaking at a one-day awareness programme on �Mental Health and Need of Day Care Centre� organised by Centre for Women Development (CWD) at Well Being Home, Sangaiprou on Thursday, Dr Gojendra observed that ever since outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in May 2023, which left over 60,000 people displaced, mental health issues have increased in the state.

"While successive floods also put immense burden on the mental health of the people, the rise in substance abuse cases does not represent a good outlook for the state either," he cautioned.

According to Dr Gojendra, around 20 per cent of the people of Manipur are suffering from mental distress.

While minor mental issues does not require hospitalisation, serious distress mandates staying at a mental health care centre or day care centre, he explained, while expressing concern over lack of adequate number of such facilities in the state.

Advising against stigmatising those suffering from mental health issues, Dr Gojendro emphasised the need of day care centres to allow patients to relax and recover, especially in the prevailing situation of the state.

Observing that people with mental health issues are often housed at de-addiction centres, he advised against such practices.

"This is not suitable and should not be done," he stressed, calling for the authorities concerned to look into the matter.

Presided over by CWD president Kh Jeevanmala, the programme was attended by National Mental Health Program, NHM state nodal officer Dr A Ranita as guest of honour.
