Imphal, May 17 2025:
Republican Party of India (Athawale) office bearers led by party's Manipur State Committee president and national secretary Maheshwar Thounaojam met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on Friday morning and submitted a memorandum, urging the latter to do the needful for inclusion of the Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.
Speaking to newspersons after meeting the Governor, Maheshwar informed that the memorandum was submitted along support documents, in a follow up to the declaration made by the party's new office bearers to include Meitei/Meetei in ST List.
He pointed out that the Meitei/Meetei was recognised as an indigenous hill tribe during the then British rule, but was removed from the ST list when Manipur merged with India.
Recalling all other dated accounts of Meitei/Meetei of being recognised in the ST list, he likened indifferent attitude of authorities concerned for granting ST status to the Meitei/Meetei is akin to denying the rights of the endangered community.
In response, the Governor took serious note of the matter and assured to study the documents in detail and give his all to ensure the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list, Maheshwar conveyed.
