Imphal, June 02 2024:
Despite some relief for those whose houses were flooded due to heavy rainfall from Cyclone Remal, many homes in Imphal East remain inundated as the excess water has no outlet.
Although the river levels have decreased, thousands of people are still staying in relief camps.
Following days of incessant rainfall, the banks of the Imphal River were breached at several points, causing flooding in various areas of Imphal East and Imphal West.
However, on Saturday, the water level decreased, and the breached banks were repaired, controlling the inflow of water.
Despite these efforts, many areas remain inundated as there are no outlets for the water to drain away.
With the rainfall stopped, the level of the Nambul River, which flows through the heart of Imphal city, has decreased considerably.
This has allowed vehicles to use roads that were previously impassable due to flooding.
However, the stretch of Imphal Tiddim Road at Nambol Phoijing remains problematic for vehicles, as the area is still inundated.
Many houses in Heingang assembly constituency of Imphal East are still inundated, forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter in relief camps.
At the Lairikyengbam Leikai relief camp, where many have taken refuge, the DC concerned is providing various relief materials.
However, residents are facing significant challenges related to health issues.
It may be mentioned that the state government has appointed Nodal Officers to assist and provide shelter to flood victims.
These officers have been instructed to regularly inspect the affected areas and address the issues faced by the residents.
Additionally, the district commissioners have been directed to submit detailed reports of their respective districts to the chief secretary twice a day.
