Imphal, May 29 2025:
The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) condemned the attack on a shop owner from North East India at Delhi's Vijay Nagar.
NEFIS, in a statement, said that the assault carried out by a group of miscreants, was reportedly triggered by false claims related to the victim's dietary habits.
The shop owner was brutally beaten in front of his family by a mob shouting hateful slogans, and later required medical attention, it said.
Saying that the disturbing incident highlights the growing trend of mob vigilantism, which continues unchecked due to the absence of strict legal action, NEFIS added that such attacks, unfortunately, are not new.
Students and residents from North East States have long been subjected to discrimination and violence, targeted for their appearance, language, and food choices, the Forum said and added that women from the region are particularly vulnerable to acts of racism and sexual harassment.
What is even more concerning is the role of law enforcement in these incidents.
Despite open threats made by the assailants to target the rented accommodations of North-East students, no steps have been taken to arrest them.
Instead, the police have reportedly filed a case against the victim himself, the NEFIS rued.
Denouncing the act of violence and the alleged police's complicity, NEFIS demanded immediate arrest of those responsible and called for strong measures to prevent such incidents in the future so that migrant communities are able to live and work in Delhi without fear or intimidation.
