Woman with fractured leg dies in RIMS, uproar raised

After a woman taken inside RIMS operation theatre for surgical operation for fractured leg was declared dead, the aggrieved patient party cried foul and raised an uproar at the hospital today.
Laishram ningol Hijam ongbi Ibemcha (52) w/o H Mohen of Awang Sekmai Laipat, Imphal West was taken inside RIMS operation theatre at around 10 am today.
Some time later, the doctors informed the patient party that Ibemcha had died.
Aggrieved and enraged by the information, the patient raised an uproar in front of the Casualty Ward in the evening.
A team of Lamphel police station arrived at the scene and pacified the aggrieved relatives.
According to Longjam (ongbi) Thoibi, Ibemcha's younger sister, Ibemcha was taken to RIMS on August 13 after she suffered a fracture on her right leg (shin) .
She was treated in the Casualty Ward on the day she was taken to the hospital.
On the next day, she was admitted to the Orthopedic Ward.
As per the advice of doctors, a series of medical tests were done, Based on the test reports, the doctors fixed today for performing surgical operation on Ibemcha.
Accordingly, she was taken inside RIMS operation theatre at around 10 am today.
"Even though my sister looked quite strong and healthy at the time she was taken inside the operation theatre, the doctors said that she had died", Thoibi said.
Earlier, one doctor said that no surgical operation could be performed on Ibemcha, she said.
Legs are not vital organs and the doctors said that the operation could be performed by administering anaesthesia locally.
"But the unexpected death of my sister has proved that RIMS doctors are negligent", Thoibi decried.
Saying that the RIMS authority must carry out a thorough investigation into the death of her sister and the guilty doctors must be awarded befitting punishment, Thoibi said that they would not claim the body of her sister until justice is delivered.
