Ukhrul, September 11 2026: A house having four rooms was gutted in a fire at Kharasom village in Ukhrul district at around 1.30 am today.

The incident occurred while the family members were away from home, staying at their paddy field for agricultural work.

According to house owner Nganingkhui Zimik, the exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained as no family member was present when the fire broke out.

He said the family lost property estimated at around Rs 20 lakh, including a pucca house comprising four rooms, SBBL rifles, an almirah, furniture, clothes, an LPG stove and cylinder, and cash.

No valuable belongings could be salvaged as the family was away from home when the fire broke out.

It is reported that no fire tender service is available at the village.

Reportedly, most villagers were asleep when the fire reached its peak.

Nganingkhui has appealed to the State Government for assistance to reconstruct the house, stating that the family's livelihood depends entirely on agricultural activities.

He said the family is currently taking temporary shelter in a vacant house belonging to a neighbour.

"The family is living in scraps and is dependent on the goodwill and donations of villagers," Nganingkhui said.

Nganingkhui is survived by his wife and five children and is currently facing severe economic hardship following the incident.
