Tributes paid in memory of Maharaj Kullachandra

The Government is working on a documentary about Chahi Taret Khuntakpa also known as Seven Year Devastation for submission to the History Channel, Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam announced today.
Addressing the 91st death anniversary of Maharaja Kullachandra Dhaja at the auditorium of Manipur University as chief guest today, the Minister continued that the State Government has been putting in constant efforts to promote patriotism and Nationalism among the youth and the students.
A book titled "Know Your Manipur" was also released recently, he said and added that promotion of Manipur's culture and history is crucial as westernization and external influences, such as Korean culture have become increasingly prevalent.

Govindas maintained that Maharaj Kullachandra was the last king of independent Manipur who played a significant role in the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, fighting against the British.
Though Maharaj Kullachandra was exiled after the defeat in the war he was treated with dignity and kept at Mount Harriet, the Minister said and added that Maharaj Kullachandra spent his later days in exile at Radhakund, a sacred place in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
The bravery and resistance shown by the Manipur king against the British demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his kingdom and his people, the Minister said while appealing to the people to honour the legacy of Maharaj Kulachandra.
Honouring the legacy of Maharaj Kulachandra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed Mt Harriet as Mt Manipur, Govindas continued and maintained that the Centre's acknowledgement of Manipur's past as an independent kingdom is a matter of pride for every Manipuri.
The Government will consider installing a statue of the last Manipur king inside the Kangla Fort, Govindas added.
Chairman of Justice League Joychandra Konthoujam said that the resolve shown by Maharaja Kullachandra Singh in the war against the British is commendable and deserves acknowledgment.
He, meanwhile, said that the MLAs have been engaging in power struggles instead of working together to resolve the conflict.
Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof N Lokendra and Ningthemcha Ningshing Lup president Dr RK Bidyapati Chanu also attended the programme among others.
The anniversary was organised by the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipur War, 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur) and Ningthemcha Ningshing Lup.
The gathering paid floral tributes to the Maharaj and other freedom fighters during the observance.
