Three-day Bharat Nirman campaign begins in Ukhrul

Imphal, November 01 2012: Ukhrul sees major leap in rural telephony; strides toward national objectives in ICDS implementation and witnessed improvement in healthcare system.

These were reported during the three-day Bharat Nirman Campaign which began today at at the Multi Purpose hall, Mini Secretariat, Ukhrul headquarters.

This is the second such campaign in Ukhrul district under the aegis of Ministry of I&B, Government of India.

Sub Divisional Officer of Chingai, J Huileng set the programme into motion by lighting the inaugural lamp as Chief Guest of the programme.

AW Ringshangphi, District Program Officer, ICDS Cell Ukhrul and Silla Konghay, President Tangkhul Shanao Long attended the function as Functional president and Guest of Honour respectively.

Giving the keynote address, Media and Communication Officer of Press Information Bureau, Govt of India, Imphal Premlata Loitam said that government of India is taking up various welfare programs for the benefit of its citizens as a democratic country.

All these welfare programs are meant to promote the livelihood of its citizens especially in rural areas.

However due to lack of information on these programs many people in the rural areas hardly got the benefits.

Therefore the programme is organised with the attempt to disseminate the welfare programs of Government of India through the respective PIB in the State in collaboration with different Union Government's agencies viz DFP, DAVP, Song and Drama Division, All India Radio, Doordarshan.

Premlata further said that it is hard to get the benefits of the different programs without knowing the programs.

She cited example of the implementation of Total Sanitation program wherein low cost latrines are being constructed in rural areas all over the country.

However, it is found that due to lack of knowledge on this program, many people are found to be deprived of these benefits.

Guest of Honour Ms AW Ringshangphi in her speech said that Bharat Nirman Campaign is an opportunity for the people to expand their knowledge on the program and policies of the country.

Providing platform to the people to interact with the concerned authority is in fact the opportunity never to be missed out by every citizen who has a sense of development.

Carrying out this campaign in Ukhrul is a great chance for the people of Ukhrul District.

As a part of the campaign, 15 exhibition stalls of various states and central govt were displayed.

Artistes of Song and Drama Division, Imphal performed various theme based short plays, songs and dances during the inaugural function.

Excerpts of performance report: Health care: Community participation has been reported to be impressive in the ongoing implementation of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in Ukhrul district and the public are availing maximum benefits from the national flagship programme, said Irengbam Rajeev, DPM of NRHM, Ukhrul during the programme.

Ever since the implementation of NRHM in 2006 in Ukhrul, Irengbam said, the district is availing benefits from the national flagship programme with visible improvement in rural health facilities.

He informed that health infrastructure has now been improved in the district with strengthening of human resource added by new techniques and know-hows.

He also stated that many are under BPL category in Ukhrul and therefore maintaining good health can fight poverty and uplift family's earning.

"This is one major policy being undertaken through NRHM at larger perspective," he added.

Under the NRHM programme, Ukhrul is availing benefits including healthcare packages like Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSY), Jananai Shisu Suraksha Kariakram (JSSK) and services of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) among others.

ICDS: Launched on October 2 1995 as a pilot project in Manipur, ICDS project in the District now caters the nutritional needs of more than two thousand children and nursing mother in the District.

District Project Officer(DPO) of ICDS cell Ukhrul, AW Ringshangphi in her speech during the campaign said that ICDS cell in the District has taken great stride since the launching of ICDS cell in Ukhrul District way back in 1995 as the first ICDS cell in the State of Manipur.

In Ukhrul District there are six projects, namely Ukhrul ICDS Project, Chingai ICDS Project, kamjong ICDS Project, Phungyar ICDS Project, Kasom Khullen ICDS Project and Lungchong Meiphai ICDS Project.

These six ICDS project are looking after the nutritional and other services needs of more than two thousand children below six years and nursing mothers.

The DPO while further elaborating the activities of ICDS in the District said that there are 849 Anganwadi centres and 236 mini centres in the District.

And through active participation of the 1085 Anganwadi Workers and 2170 Helpers the ICDS project in the District has able to cadres the various needs of children and nursing mother.

Rural telephony: Telecommunication has seen a major leap in the Ukhrul district of Manipur and better improvements are to be seen in the following years as efforts are being undertaken to boost rural telephony by the Governments.

In his topical presentation on "Rural Telephony" during the campaign today Woryao Sareo, SDO, BSNL, Ukhrul said the telecommunication has seen a big improvement in Ukhrul in the past ten years and every part of the state would be connected in near future.

He said that telephony has brought the people across the globe closer and communications have been made much easier and convenient in more ways than one.

In Manipur, he informed, there are 66,822 VPT services being available in the country.

Of the total services, Ukhrul has 2500 VPT with break-up category of 700 VPT, 500 WLL, 700 LL, 8 BTS, 5WLL BTS and 2 Wimax BTS.

Further, he stated that the government would allot the district with more facilities and efforts are on to increase the services in near future.
