New Delhi, September 18:
A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW), led by its chairperson Poornima Advani, will visit Manipur tomorrow and might look into the Manorama Devi case.
"We will investigate the case if a demand is made to us," Advani said today when asked about the controversy raked up on whether Manorama Devi was raped by the Assam Rifles personnel before she allegedly died in the custody of the forces.
"I do expect the Manorama Devi case to come up in a big way during our visit to the State.
We will be open to meeting everybody and if the agitating groups want to give any depositions to the Commission, they are most welcome to," the NCW chairperson told reporters.
There have been contradictory reports about the alleged rape and custodial death of 32-year-old Manorama Devi, with the authorities maintaining that there was no rape and locals taking to streets stressing that she was raped and died in the custody of Assam Rifles.
She also said the Commission might consider investigating the case if any demand was made for it.
"So far, there has been no representation from the agitating groups to the Commission demanding an investigation of the case," Advani said.
