Advocate among 4 held in fraud case

Imphal, July 18 2025: Four individuals including an advocate, who claimed motor accident compensation using fake voter identity (ID) cards, have been arrested and sent to seven days police custody.

The arrested individuals have been identified as advocate Wahidur Rahman (51), son of Md Jallaluddin of Lilong Awang Leikai, Md Abdul Samad (54) of Lilong Haoreibi Turel Ahanbi, Md Bashirur Rahman (53), son of late Md Hamitulla of Lilong Haoreibi Turel Ahanbi and Jamila Begum (38), wife of Md Abdul Bakar of Keirao Makting Mayai Leikai.

As per sources, Motor Accident Claim Tribunal filed a report to officer in-charge of Lamphel police station on July 16 at 2pm that some individuals attempted to withdraw compensation from the tribunal using fake ID cards.

The report mentioned that three individuals filed application for availing compensation in three different cases based on order passed by the tribunal on December 18, 2024 to award Rs 1.5 lakh.

The tribunal had been awaiting disbursement of the fund deposited at its account to claimants after identification verification.

Three individuals namely Md Niyamuddin (50), Md Mu-jibur (45) and Bilkish Banu (25) claimed the compensation amount but voter ID cards of all of them were found to be fake, the report mentioned.

It was found during the course of investigation that advocate Wahidur made all the arrangement for claiming the compensation amount using fake voter ID carets, and fictitious names and photographs.

He even made fake voter ID cards for Abdul Samad, Bashirur Rahman and Jamila Begum to withdraw the compensation amount.

Accordingly, authority handed over real individuals Abdul Samad, Bashirur Rahman and Jamila Begum along with advocate Wahidur and fake documents to Lamphel police station.

Lamphel PS registered an FIR and produced all of them before duty magistrate on Thursday with the prayer for police remand, which the court upheld and granted seven days' custody to facilitate further investigation.
