JNV hosts anti-ragging sensitisation programme

Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) chairperson Keis-am Pradipkumar, on Tuesday said that while rules, norms, guidelines and regulations are necessary to curb ragging and bullying, efforts to end such practices must begin with individuals.
He was speaking at a one-day sensitisation programme on "Anti-Ragging and Bullying" organised at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Chandel by the Centre for Women and Girls (CWG) and MCPCR.
Pradipkumar said that ragging and bullying can take many forms and it is vital for all to understand and recognise them to effectively combat the problem.
Chandel SDC and executive magistrate Mothil Saka, representing DC L Nandakumar, recalled incidents of ragging and bullying in educational institutions, narrating how seniors often made juniors perform personal chores.
He urged students to report such acts to school staff or authorities concerned so that action can be taken against the perpetrators.
In her keynote address, CWG executive director Hechin Ha-okip cited data showing more than 3,100 cases of ragging and bullying reported from 1,946 colleges between 2022 and 2024, with most cases occurring in medical and engineering colleges.
She said that these incidents have created volatile and unfavourable learning environments and stressed the need to build safe spaces for students.
MCPCR member Md Habibur Rahaman shared various strategies to tackle and prevent ragging and bullying, especially in schools and colleges.
During the technical session, MCPCR legal consultant advocate Th Rajkishore spoke on "Prohibition and Eradication of Ragging Act, 2019", outlining legal provisions to address the issue.
JNV Chandel principal Dr Amarson Snakhil expressed gratitude to the resource persons for their valuable insights, expressing belief that the programme would help students not only understand the seriousness of ragging and bullying but also work to eradicate them from their environment.
