Lunkhomang Haokip who was convicted under Section 21 (c) of ND&PS Act has been sentenced to years rigorous imprisonment.
Lunkhomang Haokip, son of Janglet Haokip of Langkhong village, Kangpokpi district was produced before Special Court ND&PS Manipur today via video conferencing for Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa for sentence hearing.
Lunkhomang Haokip was convicted on July 17 by Monalisa Maibam, Judge of Special Court ND&PS Manipur under Section 21 (c) of ND&PS Act.
According to the case details, Lunkhomang Haokip, son of Janglet Haokip of Langkhong village, was arrested on October 15, 2022, by a team of Narcotic and Affairs of Border Police Station while transporting 2.040 kg of brown sugar in a two-wheeler's tool box at Pukhao Terapur near Dolaithabi Dam, Imphal East.
During the sentence hearing today, Special PP of the State prayed the Court that no leniency be shown to the convict as the State of Manipur has been facing a difficult situation because of the drug menace.
The Special PP prayed the Court to award the maximum sentence prescribed under Section 21(c) of the NDPS Act to the convict.
On the other hand, the defence counsel prayed for leniency saying that the convict has no criminal antecedent and he is the sole breadwinner of his family with three minor children and an ailing wife.
The Court, after hearing both the Special PP and the defence counsel, sentenced Lunkhomang haokip to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and pay a fine of Rs one lakh.
The fine of Rs one lakh should be paid within six months failing which the convict shall be liable to undergo another term of simple imprisonment of one year.
The Court order directed that the period of 1012 days which the convict has already spent in custody shall be set off against the prison term.
The Court also asked jail authorities to provide necessary medical facilities to the convict.
