Kakching, May 17 2025:
A three-day training programme on "Seed Production in Improved Rice Varieties" concluded on Friday at the ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chandel.
The training from May 14 was organised under the Front Line Demonstration on Participatory Seed Production initiative to enhance farmers' capacity in producing quality seeds using scientific methods.
The technical session was led by Subject Matter Specialist (plant breeding) Ts Leenda Monsang, who provided in-depth guidance on varietal selection, scientific seed production techniques, held preparation, and pest and disease management.
As part of the training, quality seeds and plant protection chemicals were distributed to 20 participating farmers.
These inputs, provided under the frontline demonstration initiative, aim to encourage practical application and improve rice productivity at the grassroots level.
KVK, Chandel head and senior scientist A Ameeta Devi, and SMS (horticulture) Ps Lavid Anal attended the event and highlighted the importance of farmer-led seed production in strengthening local seed systems, improving food security, and enhancing farm incomes.
One of the key highlights of the training was testimony by Ds Toreiphun, a progressive farmer from the district.
She shared her personal journey from traditional paddy farming to improved seed production practices supported by KVK Chandel.
Her success in producing and distributing quality seeds to fellow farmers served as a source of inspiration and reinforced the benefits of adopting scientific agricultural techniques.
