Facing issues in procuring 3k curtains from weavers: GM

Imphal, July 25 2025: Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Manipur general manager Th Basanta has stated that they are facing issues in collecting 3000 curtains outsourced to local weavers.

A 14-day state handloom expo (Hathkarga Mela) organised by the Corporation was inaugurated at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi on Friday.

The inaugural function was attended by Weaver Service Centre, Porompat assistant director cum head Beauty Milli, Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited general manager (administration) Th Basanta and Handloom state awardee Heikham Sunita as chief guest, president and guest of respectively.

The function was also participated by district project managers, CDE and textile designers and artisans.

Speaking on the occasion, Beauty Milli expressed that though she has recently arrived she is amazed with varied weaves of the state.

She then urged all those visiting the fair to buy and encourage the weavers of the state.

Corporation general manager (administration) Th Basanta said that the fair is meant to provide a platform to weavers to showcase and sell their products.

He informed that the Corporation received orders for supplying the curtains and home furniture items for use at the new Secretariat office.

However, they are facing a huge issue in producing the items.

Previously, the Corporation had urged the weavers to produce more local products and diversified the same.

Unfortunately, the weavers have been unable to diversify.

In addition, it is difficult to ascertain whether the weavers are availing government benefits of subsidised materials and selling the products at affordable prices, he opined.

Basanta then informed that the Directorate and the Corporation have made all preparations to participate in the National Handloom Day scheduled on August 7.As such, the authorities are discussing how to address the issues and problems faced by weavers in view of the event, he added.
