Imphal, August 14 2025:
Manipur University Health Centre, in collaboration with All Manipur Kidney Transplant Patients' Welfare Association, on Thursday organised a one-day awareness programme on "Nephrology and its Prevalence in Manipur".
Speaking at the event, Shija Hospitals nephrologist Dr Guliver Potsangbam informed that though kidney transplant is the best treatment for kidney failure, yet only about 4 per cent of the 2 lakh kidney patients in India who require it each year receive one.
The shortage is not due to lack of transplant centres, but scarcity of donors, he pointed out, adding that even in Manipur, four hospitals can perform the surgery.
Dr Guliver observed that the trend of families preferring fewer members has reduced the number of potential relatives willing to donate.
Association's media advisor Phanjoubam Lanajit also attended the event as guest speaker and delved on challenges faced by kidney patients.
