Reacting to the arrest of one Nongthombam Meiraba of Saiton Heiyaikon under Kumbi assembly constituency, who had been reportedly serving as a village volunteer to protect the community, by the NIA from his residence on Saturday, Saiton residents staged a protest demonstration at Heiyaikon on Sunday, demanding his unconditional release.
During the protest, meira paibi activists raised slogans such as "We condemn the arrest of village volunteers", "Release the village volunteer immediately", "Withdraw all charges against the village volunteer", and "Meiraba should be released immediately without any condition".
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the protest, Heiyaikon Meira Paibi secretary Aheibam Babita informed that Meiraba (25) s/o Nongthombam Mani and Nirmala, was arrested by the NIA on Saturday without furnishing arrest memo.
She asserted that Meiraba is an innocent person, who has been rendering service to protect his village from attacks carried out by Kuki narco-terrorists.
As such, she demanded his unconditional release.
