COCOMI team meets farmers in fringe villages

A delegation of COCOMI Farmers' Wing met farmers living in fringe villages of Imphal East district like Yaingangpokpi, Thamnapokpi, Sabungkhok Khunou and Santi Khongbal on Friday and discussed problems the latter are facing in carrying out agricultural activities.
During the discussion, Thamnapokpi Village Committee secretary Leitam Modhuchandra Meitei told the COCOMI delegation on behalf of farmers of Thamnapokpi that cultivation is allowed in some paddy fields but farmers are still unable work in many paddy fields.
If adequate security personnel are deployed near Kuki villages, cultivation could be taken up in paddy fields where farmers are apprehensive of setting foot, he said.
The COCOMI farmers' wing also visited and inspected paddy fields located near by the hills on the western side of Yaingangpokpi, Sabungkhok Khunou and Santi Khongbal.
During the visit, a local farmer Meinam Open said that cultivation has been resumed at paddy fields located nearby Meetei villages but similar activities remain disrupted in more than 100 Loukol near Kuki villages after security forces prevented entry of Meetei farmers.
A farmer of Shanti Khongbal Nungshitombi also told the COCOMI delegation that most of the paddy fields of the village belong to the Meeteis and local farmers also work in some paddy fields belonging to the Tangkhul community in the past on rent basis.
However, cultivation has been stopped for nearly three years and farmers are facing enormous problems, Nungshitombi said adding that there has been no compensation from the government till date.
