Imphal, June 25 2025:
Denouncing the recent remarks by Union home minister Amit Shah that the Manipur conflict is an ethnic crisis and unrelated with terrorism, Imagi Meira president Thokchom Sujata demanded the Union Home Minister retract his statement at the earliest.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club Thangjing Hall on Tuesday, Sujata expressed that people of Manipur are well aware that genesis of the conflict is due to the Chin-Kuki-Zo militants targeting innocent Manipuri particularly Meeteis.
Pointing out that Kuki militants even used drones to drop bombs and killed innocent women and children, she asserted that root cause of the conflict is aggression by the militants and not a case of ethnic crisis.
The statement of the Union Home Minister ruling out formation of a popular government till there is harmony between warring Meetei and Kuki communities, Sujata termed Amit Shah's claim as not only irresponsible but also testifies lack of unity within the rank and file of the BJP.
She contended such statement clearly implies that a government could not be formed without the approval of Kuki MLAs.
Sujata further condemned both ruling and opposition parties for their silence on the Home Minister's remarks and demanded the minister to retract his statement.
Stating that CSO leaders who have been trying to unite the people under the 'Idea of Manipur' should not be arrested, Sujata condemned the differential treatment where actions are taken swiftly if Kukis file FIR but actions delayed if FIRs target the Kukis.
Manipur will surely burnt if only voices of those scheming to balkanise Manipur are heard, she cautioned.
