Sugnu MLA assures safeguard of farmers

Sugnu MLA K Ranjit has assured the farmers of Serou and Sugnu all possible protective measures till harvest of the crops planted.
He acknowledged that Meetei farmers have been facing challenges in accessing their paddy fields in the foothills ever since the conflict broke out on May 3, 2023.The MLA gave the assurance on Monday on the sidelines of inspecting ongoing repair work of the Kutcha dam across the Chakpi River, which has been constructed to channelize water to irrigate the paddy fields in Serou area.
He stated that repairing of the dam, which will be completed within Tuesday, will resume water supply to around 350 pari of paddy fields in the area.
Referring to the prevailing unrest situation, Ranjit highlighted the challenges faced by Meetei farmers, particularly after a farmer from Phubala in Bishnupur district suffered bullet injuries while working in his field.
Such incidents have left many farmers reluctant and fearful of venturing to the foothills.
However, MLA Ranjit opined that the farmers of Serou and Sugnu need not worry, as adequate security measures are already in place and will continue until the harvest is completed.
The MLA reiterated his commitment to stand by the farmers throughout the entire agricultural season.
He also informed that around 100 youths from Kakching Khunou, along with farmers from Sugnu and Serou, totalling about 200, are part of the dam repairing workforce.
Security for the farmers and volunteer workers is being ensured by personnel of 46 Assam Rifles, BSF stationed in Serou, Manipur police led by the Sugnu SDPO and VDF personnel.
The farmers of Serou expressed gratitude to MLA Ranjit for his continued support and appreciated his comprehensive efforts, including securing fertilizers, ensuring safety and facilitating crop plantation amid the trying times.
