Imphal, July 17 2025:
DM College of Arts principal Prof S Lanchenba Meetei on Thursday emphasised the importance of history in shaping a civilisation, stating that a society without history lacks direction.
He was speaking as chief guest at a lecture programme and the publication of the college's History Club's annual report for 2024-25, held at the college.
Prof Lanchenba expressed concern over an emerging trend where criticising one's own motherland and parents is being seen as prestigious.
He lauded the initiative of having a History Club and expressed confidence that the club will receive support from all quarters, stating it is a much-needed step toward preserving collective memory.
Highlighting the contribution of DM Colleges, now part of DM University, he said that the institution has played a crucial role in the development of education in the state.
Many of Manipur's noted personalities received their education from DM Colleges, which, he said, could rightly be called the cradle of modern Manipur.
Calling history the backbone of every community, Prof Lanchenba urged the History Club to publish regular bulletins and initiate further research to address historical gaps in the state.
Retired IAS officer Dr RK Nimai, additional secretary (Home) A Subhash, DM College of Arts retired principal Prof Ch Sheelaramani, and head of history department Prof Samuel Duidang attended the event as guests of honour.
Manipur Historical Society president and former dean of the Schobl of Sciences, Manipur University, Prof Naorem Joykumar presided over the function.
