Imphal, May 27 2025:
Student Wing of Coordinating Committee on Manipur integrity (COCOMI) has strongly condemned sealing of the office of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) by the police.
The Student Wing described the move as an unfortunate attempt to suppress democratic expressions and student-led agitations.
"It is deeply regrettable that the legitimate and democratic movements of the student community are being met with such heavy-handed measures by the authorities," read the Wing in a statement.
It asserted that forcibly shutting down the office of a student organisation is not only violation of democratic rights but also an act that will fail to suppress the ongoing agitation.
"Such actions will not succeed in crushing the movement.
Rather, they are likely to escalate tensions further," the Wing cautioned.
It further stated that the May 20 Gwaltabi incident is not a trivial issue, but a direct challenge to the historical identity of Manipur and a clear message undermining the value and dignity of its people.
It was in response to such unwarranted provocations that the public rose in protest, which eventually escalated, reasoned the Wing.
The Student Wing stated that it would be a wise and responsible gesture on the part of the Governor to issue a public apology.
The student wing also issued a strong warning, stating that if the authorities resort to using force or issuing threats in an attempt to suppress the people's movement, particularly that of the student community, it is prepared to face such actions with full courage and determination.
It reiterated that the ongoing agitation will continue until their demands are fully met and further appealed to the public to support the movement.
