Let's reduce caesarean deliveries: Dr Chambo

Health Services, director Dr Chambo Gonmei has urged for concerted efforts to curb the alarming rise of caesarean (C-section) operations in the state.
He made the appeal during the state-level observance of World Population Day-2025 on the theme "Healthy Timing and Spending Between Pregnancy for Planned Parenthood", jointly organised by Directorate of Health and Family Services, and State Health Mission, National Health Mission, Manipur at Indian Medical Association (IMA), Lamphelpat on Monday.

The observance was attended by NHM Manipur State Mission director Dr M Dinesh Singh as functional president, and Family Welfare Services director Dr N Hemantakumar Singh and Health Services Manipur retired gynaecologist Dr Ch Nabakanta Sharma as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Dr Chambo informed that of the total 8.23 billion people in the world, 1.44 billion are Indians whereas as per the 2011 census, the total population in Manipur is around 32 lakhs.
He continued that the family planning included consuming or injecting contraceptives, or abortion, adding that in present time, the theme is 'healthy children, healthy family'.
"Nowadays, people marry young and give birth from a young age, " he related, pointing out the need to teach the youth on sex education in schools and when is the legal age to marry.
Dr Chambo then said that there is always a risk of serious, sometimes fatal bleeding while giving birth and as such, strict precautionary measures should be taken, apart from having a specialised doctor and proper communication between medical staff and family.
Observing the alarming rise in caesarean section operations, he stressed the need to reduce the number of caesarean operations and urged prospective mothers to exercise regularly before and after birth.
