Street vendors demand end to evictions

A street vendors' meet on the theme "Stop Eviction of Street Vendors" was organised by Salai Taret Apunba Nupi Samaj Lup, Khwairamband Keithel in collaboration with the Road Side Vendors' Welfare Association (RSVWA), Khwairamband Keithel, at Rupmahal Theatre, BT Road, on Sunday.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, RSVWA president Kshetri Tama said that preventing street vendors from plying their wares amounts to direct violation of their right to livelihood.
The president stressed the need for a digital survey to issue identity cards to street vendors and urged the government to allow them to operate under a proper set of rules by collecting weekly or monthly fees.
Tama further stated that it was unjust to ban vendors from selling on some days while permitting them on others, and called for a longterm strategy to safeguard their rights and means of sustenance.
During the meet, street vendors raised slogans such as "Do not torture the street vendors" and "Make us able to live" .
The meet was also attended by Minority Muslim Women Vendors' Union advisor Jano Begum, Salai Taret Apunba Nupi Samaj Lup vice president Chanamthabam Tombi, secretary Pheiroijam Ibemhal and RSVWA advisor Kh Ibeton as presidium members.
