Wabagai area experiencing flooding

Kakching, July 06 2025: Owing to the incessant rainfall over the past few days, the water level of Shengmai/Sekmai River, flowing through various areas of Kakching district, has risen sharply, inundating many areas in Wabagai area.

The upper portion of the Bedam Khong Maril located to north of Wabagai Turel Mamei Culvert has begun overflowing.

Low lying residential areas including Wabagai Awang Leikai, Mairenbam Lai Kalika, Keirak Leirak Achouba, Thingel Leikai, paddy, held in Wabagai Turel Mamei, and Wabagai Terapishak are facing breach of banks, with the water flowing into the surrounding fields and fish farms.

The worst hit areas are from Wabagai to Kharungpat.

Wabagai MLA Dr Usham Deben and Wabagai Zilla Parshad Administrative Committee member Salam Dhanabir Luwang engaged a JCB to block the flood waters with farmers of Wabagai Turel Mamei to Bedam joining hands in preventing further flooding in the areas.

Meanwhile, one of the affected farmers named Sorok-khaibam Sanajaoba stated that the flooding occurs in the area every year.

Although the department concerned had been urged multiple times regarding the matter, no action has been taken till date.

Recently Natekgong, which is a tributary of Sekmai River, was repaired by Hangoon GP.

However, the work done is unsatisfactory and the farmers of the area are facing the brunt.

As such, an RTI would be filed regarding the work done at Natekgong, he informed, while adding that other necessary action would be taken, if and when needed.
