Imphal, August 26 2025:
The Rastrahit Sarvopari Sangathan (RSS) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to include North-East India in the National Anthem.
Though composed in 1911 as a tribute to the unity of India, the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, in its current form does not include a direct reference to the North-East region, which comprises Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.
These States are not only rich in culture and history but have also made profound contributions to India's integrity, defence, and development, said the RSS seeking the attention of the PM .
The RSS, in its presentation, said the National Anthem may be revised or extended to include a respectful and poetic reference to North-East India-possibly as "Purvottar Bharat" or any term that appropriately represents the region's cultural identity.
The Government may initiate a formal consultation process involving Constitutional experts, literary scholars, and North-East representatives to explore the most suitable and respectful approach to this update, the RSS added.
"Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji who has tirelessly worked toward National integration and respect for every region, we firmly believe that after a long wait, the time is right to make this vital inclusion".
This change will not only bring emotional fulfilment to the people of the North-East but also strengthen the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat, ensuring every Indian feels equally represented in this sacred symbol of Nationhood, said the RSS .
