Imphal, May 26 2026:
Stating that the Nagas do not recognise Kangpokpi as a district, the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has directed all Kuki villages in Kamjong and Ukhrul districts to refrain from putting up any provocative signage and not comply with the order issued by certain Kuki groups to pay hill house tax of Ukhrul district to authorities in Kangpokpi.
In a statement issued by its vice president RS Jolly-son, the TNL said it takes serious exception to recent directives issued by the Working Committee of Kuki CSOs (WCKCSOs) ordering Kuki villages in Ukhrul and Kamjong to pay house tax to Kangpokpi, and subsequently by the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Ukhrul, to put up signage identifying themselves as part of Kangpokpi district.
It added that the instructions issued by the Kuki organisations are "totally irresponsible, unconstitutional, and highly provocative" .
Asserting that the 'ancestral land' and territorial jurisdiction in respect of Ukhrul and Kamjong strictly belong to the indigenous Tangkhul Naga people, TNL added, "Our historical ownership predates any present fabricated narratives being imposed by the Kukis." TNL also said that no student body, civil organisation or extra-Constitutional entity has the power to alter territorial classification, issue coercive directives or create parallel administrative structure through intimidation and threats.
The Nagas in Manipur under United Naga Council (UNC) have been pressing for the rollback of the 'unconstitutional' creation of seven districts in December 2016, which arbitrarily bifurcated the 'Naga ancestral land' without prior consent or consultation from the landowners, it said.
As such, the TNL reiterated that the Nagas do not recognise Kangpokpi as a district, but as an administrative part of Senapati.
Stating that the directives issued by the WCKCSOs and the KSO constitute a direct challenge to the landowners and that such arbitrary moves will not be taken lightly, the TNL instructed all Kuki villages in Kamjong and Ukhrul districts to refrain from putting up any provocative signage and from complying with orders issued to pay hill house tax to authorities in Kangpokpi.
