Imphal, May 24 2025:
Hundreds of students, women, and teachers formed a human chain from Kwakeithel to Changangei Uchekon along Tiddim Road today protesting the Centre's alleged policies that threaten Manipur's identity.
The protest demonstration was organised by All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Committee on Human Rights (CoHR), Manipur, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) and Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLAMPAM) .
Slogans such as "Remove AFSPA", "Don't Attempt to Obliterate Manipur", "Protect Manipur's Identity", "Stop Divide & Rule Policy" and "Self-Determination is Our Birthright" were raised during the protest.
Speaking to the media, MSF president Hijam Roshan Meitei stated that the Gwaltabi incident, where defence personnel ordered journalists to cover "Manipur" on their bus is a serious issue threatening the State's identity.
He claimed that this conduct exposed the Government of India's alleged scheme to abolish Manipur.
AMUCO general secretary Leishangthem Pratap Meitei said that they will organise more protest demonstrations against the Gwaltabi incident.
Saying that an Army officer cannot give an instruction to cover "Manipur" signage on a State Transport bus, he claimed that a high-level conspiracy was involved behind the Gwaltabi incident.
Accusing the Centre of implementing divide and rule policy in the State, he added that the people of Manipur must teach the Governor, Chief Secretary and the Security Advisor a fitting lesson.
