Rebel leader hurt, wife killed in mishap

Imphal, January 22 2026:
Former Acting Chairperson of Pambei-led UNLF escaped with some injuries while his wife succumbed to injuries at Kripadrashini Advance Hospital last night after they were knocked down from behind by a speeding car at Thongju Boroi Makhong crossing along National Highway-102 (Imphal-Moreh road), Imphal West under Singjamei police station.
Sources said that the incident took place at around 10.20 pm when Moirang-them Joy alias Joyjao alias Nongyai (64) s/o (L) Lokhon of Thongju Nepram Leirak and his wife Moi-rangthem (ongbi) Jibanlata Leima (56) were on their way back home on a two-wheeler (Activa) from Kha Naorem Leikai.
When they were about to reach Thongju Boroi Makhong crossing, a speeding car from behind knocked them down and fled from the spot.
Jibanlata was evacuated from the spot by some local people and rushed to Kripadrashini Advance Hospital but she succumbed to her injuries.
On the other hand, Moirangthem Joy alias Joyjao alias Nongyai was rushed to Shija Hospital with injuries on his head and other parts of the body.
He was discharged early this morning after receiving some stitches on the head.
Singjamei Police have registered a case in connection with the incident which looked like a hit and run case.
The dead body of Moirangthem (O) Jibanlata Leima has been claimed by family members after post mortem with full video coverage at RIMS morgue in the presence of an Executive Magistrate today.
A late report said that three individuals have been pulled up in connection with the hit and run case, along with a car (Alto K 10) .
The three individuals have been identified as 23-year-old Davidson Thokchom (driver) of Bashikhong, Robertson Naorem (24) of Naorem Leikai, Liwa Lambi and Rohit Okram (23) of Singjamei Chingamakha, sources said.
