Imphal, October 13 2025:
Students of DM University held a sit-in protest at their campus today against the demolition of the Manipur Rajbari.
Speaking to the media, Ksh Medhajit, a student of DM College of Arts, strongly condemned the demolition of the historic building closely associated with Manipur's history without giving any prior notice to the public.
Urging the Government to reconstruct the bungalow in its original form, he warned that students in Manipur would launch intense agitation if the structure is not restored identically.
Claiming that the Government of India has been undertaking a series of actions detrimental to the interests of Manipur's people, he stated that the demolition of the Manipur Rajbari speaks volumes about the disregard for the State's historical and cultural heritage.
Further stating that the clarification provided by the Planning and Development Authority (PDA) regarding the demolition was unacceptable to the students, he urged the Government to take action against the authority responsible for the demolition.
The Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has urged the Governor to intervene and take strict action against those responsible for the demolition of the Manipuri Rajbari.
Addressing the media at the Manipur University campus, MUSU president Nongpoknganba Yembem condemned the demolition of the historic building as an unforgivable attempt to distort Manipur's history.
He also said that the clarification of the Planning and Development Authority lacks intellectual sensitivity.
Demolishing a historical monument to build a replica in its place is a thoughtless act, tantamount to assaulting Manipur's history, he said, urging the relevant authorities to preserve the Redland site under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, similar to the INA Memorial Complex at Moirang.
